The theoretical weight of 4140 steel is the weight calculated from the nominal size and density of the steel (formerly known as specific gravity).

The theoretical weight of 4140 steel is the weight calculated from the nominal size and density of the steel (formerly known as specific gravity). This is called the theoretical weight. This is directly related to the length, cross-sectional area, and tolerance of the steel. Due to the allowable deviation of the steel in the manufacturing process, the theoretical weight and actual weight calculated by the formula are somewhat different, so it is only used as a reference when estimating.

Actual weight of 4140 steel

The actual weight of steel refers to the weight obtained by the actual weighing (weighing) of the steel, which is called the actual weight. Actual weight is more accurate than theoretical weight.

Calculation method of steel weight

(1) Gross weight is the symmetry of “net weight”, which is the total weight of the steel itself and the packaging material. The transportation company calculates the freight based on gross weight. However, the purchase and sale of steel is calculated based on the net weight.

(2) Net weight is the symmetry of “gross weight”. The gross weight of the steel minus the weight of the packaging material, that is, the actual weight, is called the net weight. In steel purchase and sale, it is generally calculated by net weight.

(3)Tare The weight of 4140 steel packaging materials is called tare.

(4) Weight ton The unit of weight used when calculating freight based on the gross weight of steel. Its legal unit of measurement is ton (1000kg), as well as long ton (1016.16kg in English weight units) and short ton (907.18kg in American weight units).

(5) Billing weight Also known as “billing ton” or “freight ton”. The weight of the steel charged by the transportation department. Different shipping methods have different calculation standards and methods. For railway vehicle transportation, the marked weight of the truck used is generally used as the billing weight. Road transport charges freight based on the tonnage of the vehicle. Less-than-truckload for railways and highways is based on a gross weight of a few kilograms, which is charged at a minimum.
