Due to its abrasion resistance in the hardened condition, D3 tool steel machining should be limited to finished grinding.

D3 cold work tool steel Forged

Heat to 1050-1100°C, soak enough time, until heat thoroughly. then forging temperature no below 900°C.

When D3 steel tool parts are heavily machined, ground or otherwise subjected to cold work, the stress is recommend.

D3 steel cold work tool Hardening

D3 steel Packing hardening is recommended. When heat the tools in a controlled atmosphere is not possible.  Pre-heat to 750-800°C slowly, soak enough time, then up to 1000-1040°C cool in air, or up to 980°C for oil quenching.

Martempering of cold work D3 tool steel material

Pre-heat dry at 300-400°C. Pre-heat in salt at 800-850°C holding in the salt for ten mins 25mm of ruling section. Then Raise to 950-980°C , keep in the salt for ten minutes 25mm of ruling section. Marquench in salt at 230-250°C holding in the bath for five minutes 25mm of ruling section. Cool in still air. Tempering will be necessary.

Cold work D3 tool steel Annealing

Heat to 870 °C, cool slowly at a rate of not more than 6°C per hour,Then cool the D3 steel material in air.
