Compared to the conventional cast or wrought material, the LC H13 tool steel demonstrated excellent tensile properties. From the references,22–24 the yield and tensile strengths of the annealed cast or wrought H13 were about 370–510 MPa and 670 MPa respectively, while the yield and tensile strengths of the wrought H13 in hardened condition were in the range of 1290–1570 MPa and 1500–1960 MPa, respectively. The tensile and yield strengths of the as-consolidated H13 were substantially higher than the annealed cast or wrought H13, and comparable to the hardened wrought H13. The elastic modulus of the as-consolidated H13 was about the same as the wrought material. However, the elongation of as-consolidated H13 material was about 5–6%, which was lower than the hardened wrought H13. A post heat treatment might be used to improve the elongation of the LC H13 material if required.

The LC H13 showed very good wear resistance. The pin-on-disk wear test results indicated that, under the given test conditions (3.175 mm diameter Cr steel ball of Rc.63; 250 g test load; total 4000 m sliding distance), as-consolidated H13 specimens showed significantly improved wear resistance as compared to hardened wrought H13 specimens. For example, the average volume loss of the as-consolidated H13 specimens was about 0.14 mm3, which was only about 1/3 of the volume loss of the hardened H13 tempered at 482 °C (0.4 mm3) and about one order of magnitude less as compared to the annealed wrought H13 material (1.45 mm3). In addition, the average wear volume loss of Cr steel balls tested against the LC H13 specimens (0.21 mm3) was also significantly less (only 1/3 to 1/4) than that of the balls tested against the hardened or annealed wrought H13 specimens (0.56–0.88 mm3).

Jiménez et al. recently investigated a plasma-assisted physical vapour deposition technique to grow (TiAl)N films on H13 tool steel [14]. This tool steel is commonly used as a forming dye material at temperatures up to 600°C. Above this temperature the surface oxidizes and spalls quickly. In order to enable this tool material to be used at higher temperatures, a protective surface coating is needed. Thermal treatment of the H13 tool steel with and without (TiAl)N coatings were investigated with an AFM used in non-contact mode. Uncoated substrates showed appreciable increase in surface roughness due to oxidation at temperatures above 600°C whereas coated samples retained similar surface profiles after temperature treatments up to 1000°C (see Figure 3.4). X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were used to confirm and correlate these topographical measurements with the surface reactions. Extensions of the AFM, force modulation microscopy (FMM) and phase detection microscopy (PDM) were also used to image the surface. In FMM mode the tip is scanned in contact with the sample while a displacement sinusoid of a few kilohertz is applied to the tip or sample. The applied amplitude signal is modulated according to the elastic properties of the sample. FMM can therefore be used to image hard and soft regions at the same time as topological information is recorded. PDM is used when the AFM is operated in intermittent contact mode. PDM refers to the monitoring of the phase lag between an applied signal driving cantilever oscillation and the cantilever oscillation output signal. Changes in the phase lag reflect changes in the mechanical properties of the sample surface.

Tanaka et al. investigated the effect of toner particle morphology on toner fluidity and adhesion strength using an AFM [15].

Particle fluidity and interactions are influenced by surface structure size and morphology as well as the particle size and morphology. A fractal dimension was used to quantify the particle surface shape, which was related to its flow properties, and particle adhesion forces, which were measured with an AFM. The fractal dimensions were directly scaled from the nanostructure on the toner particle surfaces. A toner particle of approximately 5.5 μm diameter was attached to the AFM tip (see Figure 3.5), which was then held close to compacted toner powder (with a pressure of 54.9 MPa).

1.2344 steel has good mechanical properties and is used widely in industry, such as forming extrusion dies, forging die with large impact load, precision forging die and etc. It can satisfy the needs of the quality requirements of the mold. By the way, the surface of the mold passes through nitriding or cyanidation, the service life of the mold would increase.

H13 Steel Heat Treatment

Annealing

Heat slowly to 1550°-1650°F, hold until entire mass is heated through, and cool slowly in the furnace (40F per hour) to about 1000°F, after which cooling rate may be increased. Suitable precautions must be taken to prevent excessive carburization or decarburization.

Stress Relieving

When desirable to relieve the strains of machining, heat slowly to 1050°-1250°F, allow to equalize, and then cool in still air (Strain Relieving).

Preheat Prior to Hardening

Warm slightly before charging into the preheat furnace, which should be operating at 1400°-1500°F.

Hardening

H13 tool steel is a steel having very high hardenability and should be hardened by cooling in still air. The use of a salt bath or controlled atmosphere furnace is desirable to minimize decarburization, and if not available, pack hardening in spent pitch coke is suggested. The temperature employed is usually 1800°-1850°F, depending on size section.

Quenching

Quench in still air or dry air blast. If complicated forms are to be hardened, an interrupted oil quench can be used. Quench part in oil and remove from the bath when it just loses its color (1000°-1100°F). Finish cooling to below 150°-125°F in air, then tempers immediately.

Tempering

Tempering is carried out in 1.2344 tool steels from 538 to 649°C (1000 to 1200°F) to obtain Rockwell C hardness of 53 to 38. Double tempering can also be performed in these steels for every one hour at the preferred tempering temperature.

Hundreds tons of 4140 sheet hot rolled

My customer is surprised about 4140 sheet hot rolled delivery time,cause he thought it need 30-45 days at least.

I got an inquiry of 4140 sheet hot rolled,it’s from my regular customer today,he is not only a customer,but also a very kind friend of mine.

He told me is not a firm order,as he still need to get approved from his customer,Thought is not a big quantity,I tried to help him with getting this order.

 The inquiry information is very important.

I only have data of thickness:30mm,and there is no width & length data,and the hardness require is 28-32HRC.

I shared some pictures of our 4140 sheet hot rolled,some is the raw material without any cutting,some are the pictures of packing,and some are the 4140 sheet hot rolled by four side cut,as different size with different price.also,I notice the hardness requirements is 28-32HRC,so the condition should be quench+temper。

Delivery Time

Finally,he asked me when I could send the 4140 sheet hot rolled ,we only have 20tons(30mm) in stock,which is quench+temper condition.I asked him if he will to take only 20 tons,I could book shipping immediately,but if his final customer insist on 25 tons at least.I am afraid it would take 10 days to do heat treatment.

My customer is surprised about it,cause he thought it need 30-45 days at least.I told him we have hundreds tons of 4140 sheet hot rolled in stock every month,and some of them had been finish Q+T heat treatment,I can not say we are the largest 4140 sheet hot rolled stockist in China.but in south of China,it might be.I also told him,most of the trading company are buying from us,and sale to other countries,if he don’t believe,it’s good to compare the price,it will see the truth,but he said he won’t do that,as we had cooperate for 3 years,he know me well.

  1. The lubrication and cooling of H13  steel moldIn order to decrease the heat load of mould, people always will make  H13 cooling directly in the interval of work. However,  H13 will cause a bad impact on the mold.  H13 should be cool slowly to avoid thermal stress and cracking. Need to use the graphitic lubricant to make sure the H13 steel die work in the right way.  H13 power of radiating is great.  H13 will decrease the temperature of H13 mold at the time of work.

How to fix it- H13?

  • Analysis of chemical composition and quality of material- H13

Raise the purity of H13 steel. Decrease the content of sulfur which is the most efficient way to increase the working life of H13 steel mold. The sulfur content is at the range of 0.005-0.008% of high-quality H13 steel. According to the analysis of chemical composition and quality of material can get the result of if it is eligibilityfor H13. That  H13 will help us to make the right decision on the technology of heat treatment and forging. Test Method: Sampled the H13 steel stuff to analyze its chemical composition and if  H13 complies to the requirements. And take the sample at the steel center. Then grinding, polishing, etching with 4% nitric acid alcohol solution, examining the microstructure on an optical microscope, and assessing the grade of carbide segregation and the grade of inclusion according to relevant national technical standards.

  • The way of technology control- H13
  1. Forging Technology The ingot that diameter bigger than 70mm must preheat at the temperature range of 800-900℃. Then,  H13 it is heated at an initial forging temperature of 1065 to 1175 ° C. And the total forging ratio must bigger than 4.
  2. Spheroidizing Annealing It  H13 can make the strength get lower and improve the cutting machining properties. Do a good start for quenching and tempering. The spheroidizing annealing process is maintained at 845℃ to 900℃(1 h +1 min)/mm. And then cooled to 720℃ ~ 740℃ isothermal (2h + 1 min)/mm at the furnace. Cooling to 500 ° C at the furnace, and finally out of the furnace to air-cooled.
  3. Quenching and Tempering Technology There is the best way of H13 steel heat treatment technology. After heating at 1020°C~1080°C, then oil hardening or martempering. Tempered twice at 560-600 °C. The microstructure is tempered toughness + tempered sorbite + residual carbide, and the microhardness is 48-52HRC.

The manufacture of H13 steel die must do a good job at design, the material chosen, forging, annealing, heat treatment and etc to make sure the quality at a high level. Every step is important and has a big influence on the mold product for H13 .
