As we all know, increasing the carbon content in steel will increase the strength of the steel. For hot work die steel, it will increase the high temperature strength, hot hardness and wear resistance, but it will lead to a reduction in its toughness. Scholars in the tool steel product manual literature compared the performance of various types of H-shaped steel clearly proved this view. It is generally believed that the carbon content limit that leads to a decrease in the plasticity and toughness of steel is 0.4%. For this reason, people are required to follow the following principles in the design of steel alloying: to keep the carbon content of the steel as low as possible while maintaining the strength. Some data have been proposed: when the tensile strength of the steel is above 1550 MPa, the C content is 0.3. % -0.4% is appropriate. The strength Rm of H13 steel is described in the literature as 1503.1 MPa (at 46 HRC) and 1937.5 MPa (at 51 HRC).

The C content in TQ-1, Dievar, ADC3 and other steels recommended by consulting FORD and GM company data are 0.39% and 0.38%. The corresponding toughness indicators are listed in Table 1. The reasons can be seen from this observation.

For hot work die steels that require higher strength, the method used is to increase the Mo content or increase the carbon content based on the composition of H13 steel, which will be discussed later. Of course, a slight reduction in toughness and plasticity is possible. Expected.

2.2 Chromium: Chromium is the most common and inexpensive alloying element in alloy tool steel. The Cr content in the H-type hot work die steel in the United States ranges from 2% to 12%. Among the 37 grades of alloy tool steel (GB / T1299) in China, Cr is included in all steels except 8CrSi and 9Mn2V. Chromium has a beneficial effect on the wear resistance, high temperature strength, hot hardness, toughness and hardenability of steel. At the same time, it will significantly improve the corrosion resistance of steel when dissolved in the matrix. Cr and H13 in H13 steel Si makes the oxide film dense to improve the oxidation resistance of the steel. Furthermore, the effect of Cr on the tempering performance of 0.3C-1Mn steel is analyzed. The addition of ﹤ 6% Cr is beneficial to improve the tempering resistance of the steel, but it does not constitute secondary hardening. When the steel containing Cr ﹥ 6% is quenched, After tempering at 550 ° C, a secondary hardening effect will occur. People generally choose 5% chromium for hot work steel die steel.

In addition, the interaction effects of alloy elements must be considered. For example, when chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium are contained in the steel, Cr> 3% <sup> [14] </ sup>, Cr can prevent the formation of V4C3 and postpone Mo2C. Chromium is dissolved in the austenite of the steel to increase the hardenability of the steel. Cr, Mn, Mo, Si, and Ni are alloy elements that increase the hardenability of steel, just like Cr. People are accustomed to use the hardenability factor for characterization. Generally, the existing domestic data [15] only use data from Grossmann et al. Later, the further work of Moser and Legat [16, 22] proposed that the C content and austenite grains The degree determines the basic hardenability diameter Dic and the hardenability factor (shown in Figure 3) determined by the alloy element content to calculate the ideal critical diameter Di of the alloy steel, which can also be approximated from the following formula:

Di=Dic×2.21Mn×1.40Si×2.13Cr×3.275Mo×1.47Ni (1)

(1) Each alloy element in the formula is expressed by mass percentage. From this formula, people have a fairly clear semi-quantitative understanding of the effects of Cr, Mn, Mo, Si and Ni on the hardenability of steel.

The effect of Cr on the eutectoid point of steel is roughly similar to that of Mn. When the chromium content is about 5%, the C content of the eutectoid point decreases to about 0.5%. In addition, the addition of Si, W, Mo, V, Ti significantly reduces the C content at the eutectoid point. For this reason, it can be known that hot work die steel belongs to hypereutectoid steel like high speed steel. Decreasing the eutectoid C content will increase the alloy carbide content in the austenitized structure and in the final structure.

And there is feedback of the test is ” Uncceptable “for the goods .
Test feedback as follow :
1.The inspection result was failed due to there was rusty mark on almost all the products
2.There was no scale provided for unit weight check;
3.The actual material on labels was “38CrMoALA” not conformed to the client spec “38CrMoAl”
4.For the diameter check, for item 3-75×6000-7500mm, the actual diameter was 73mm. For item 4-80×6000-7500mm, the actual diameter was 78mm .For item 5-85×6000-7500mm, the actual diameter was 83mm.
For hardness check, material strength test, stainless steel material check, chemical composition analysis, there was no equipment or testing report provided on site.so customer accept our QC’s material test report .

After our QC feedback for the test process of inspector,the inspector did not do the steel test before ,and there without some mistake of the test way .

1.First ,the goods is Hot Rolled,Black Surface ,and there is reasonable with rusted ,Black sueface means the item is Ex-mill condition cover with Oxide Layer.

If you want the steel without the any rusted, the surface is Bright Surface with Polish process.

2.About the unit weight  and Label “38CrMoALA”, each of the sizes produced in a factory and aligned with the printed label.

3.About the Diameter ,The inspector did not use the Vernier Caliper to check it. AGS is the first one who use the length ruler to check it.

Low carbon steel (carbon content is not more than 0.30%).
Middle carbon steel (carbon content is 0.30% ~ 0.60%).
High carbon steel (carbon content is 0.60% ~ 1.00%).

The properties and processing characteristics of carbon steel mainly depend on the content of carbon and manganese, and the purity of the steel.

And what is the classification of mild steel material?
Low carbon steel can be divided into two groups based on the carbon content.
The first group refers to low carbon steel with a carbon content of less than 0.15%.The second group refers to low carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.15% to 0.30%.Mild Steel belongs to a category in the second group. That is a category with a carbon content of 0.15% to 0.30% and an Mn content of not more than 0.75%.

It should be noted that mild steel is a special one in the second group of low carbon steel. Mild steel material generally has good weldability. But due to a certain hardening tendency, pre-weld preheating may be required when the manganese content is high. The cross section is thick, or the joints are highly restrained. When the thickness of the welded joint is greater than 25mm. Especially when the carbon content of the substrate exceeds 0.22%. The mild steel needs to be preheated to about 40 ° C. And after the welding is completed, the stress release heat treatment temperature of the weld zone is about 525 ° C ~ 675 ° C.

Do you know 8620 Steel?

Do you know about the 8620 steel?  Its common process is as following:

Forging → normalization → normalizing or annealing (preparing for later) → rough machining → semi-finished product processing → carburizing or carbonitriding and quenching → tempering.

By studying the normalizing process system of 8620 steel, it can be seen the isothermal and air cooling time of the normalizing process will impact on the final structure and properties. The quality of the structure also directly affects the performance of the sample. The grain boundaries are not clear. It is known from experiments that the microstructure transformation is incomplete because the isothermal time in the isothermal furnace is not long enough.

The Ni content in the 8620 steel is half that of the 20CrNi steel. The addition of a small amount of Mo causes the upper part of the austenite isothermal transformation curve to move to the right. And because the Mn content is appropriately increased. The hardenability of this steel is still good and the strength also higher than 20CrNi steel. Commonly used in the manufacture of small and medium-sized cars, tractor engines and gears in transmission systems. It can also replace 12CrNi3 steel to manufacture carburized and cyanide parts that require high core performance.
