What is 42crmo4 steel

42crmo4 is made by placing iron, carbon, and other alloying elements into an electric furnace or oxygen furnace. The major alloying elements added to 42crmo4 are: Chromium Manganese Molybdenum Once the iron, carbon and other alloying elements have been mixed together in liquid form, it is allowed to cool. The steel may then be annealed; possibly several times.

42crmo4 is low alloy steel. Low alloy steels rely on elements other than just iron and carbon to enhance their mechanical properties. In 42crmo4, additions of chromium, molybdenum, and manganese are used to increase the strength and hardenability of the steel. The additions of chromium and molybdenum are why 42crmo4 is considered “Chromoly” steel.

1)  42crmo4 steel belongs to the alloy structural steel. After Quenching & Tempering, its hardness is 28-34 HRC.

The common stainless steel’s chromium content is higher than 12.5%. So it has anti-rust performance. From the analysis of the composition, 42crmo4 steel also has chromium. But its chromium content is only 0.8%-1.1%, which is far lower than the standard for rust prevention. Therefore, 42crmo4 steel is not stainless steel. Please pay attention to its rust prevention when using it.

But 42crmo4 steel can be used to make gears. Because lubricating oil is often used when gears are running. The lubricating oil can protect the gear from rust while protecting the normal operation of the gear.
