Problems of 4140 prehardened plate in China market

First, both good and bad quality are in the market. Some supplier provide 42CrMo materials to replace the American Standard 4140. In fact, the chemical composition of the two materials is different. When foreign buyers receive the goods, the difference can be found by testing the composition. What OTAI provide is the real American Standard 4140.

Second, 4140 Prehardened plate require quenching and tempering process. Some heat treatment plant cannot control the temperature and hardness very well. It lead to the material mechanical properties not meet standard, and eventually there will be various problems in the end use. All mechanical properties, including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, shrinkage, impact energy and hardness, are tested and delivered only when they meet the standard completely.

In fact, few stockers can prepare all sizes all the time, and the size of out of stock will greatly extend the delivery time. Last article tell the story Asia customer Mr J questioned OTAI did not supply steel 34CrNiMo6 Q+T condition from data of SGS report. I did not reply him that moment.

Next day, when I back to office, I carefully checked BS EN 10343-2009 standard and our steel 34CrNiMo6 SGS report, then understand what happened. If you study this material deeply, you will also have an idea what happened. I paste below email to explain the reason.

Quite appreciate you check my email and SGS report carefully. I guess you should ignore different diameter, different tensile strength standard after QT, and did not noticed I sent you two SGS report for different diameter. Please check attached BS EN 10343-2009 standard and machanical properties table. Our customer purchased Φ55mm,Φ210mm, Φ230mm from us.  

• Φ55mm, tensile strength in standard is 1000-1200MPa, our SGS test result is 1154MPa. Please check table 1.

• Φ210mm&Φ230mm, tensile strength in standard is 800-950MPa, our SGS test result is 936MPa. Please check table 2.

This shipment is absolutely Q+T FOR SURE. Please do not worry about this grade, all our stock is from top 3 China mill, quality is very stable.

What happened next step? You will have conclusion. Yes, Mr J admit he read my email very fast and ignore the material diameters. Mr J decide one container trail order steel 34CrNiMo6 in January 2020. That’s really good beginning in the new year 2020. Looking forward the new business with Mr J.
