The piano strings are made of strong, high carbon steel to maintain tension. The high carbon steel is heated to above 900oC and then immersed in a container containing molten lead at a temperature of 430oC to 520oC. This process is called annealing. The annealed final product has high strength and high elasticity and is also suitable for the manufacture of springs.
