Applications of 1.7225 steel  material

1.7225 steel is a typical alloy structural steel, Its Mechanical Properties is very nice. So the 1.7225 application range is very widly. DIN 1.7225 can use in gearing, bearing, machinery structural parts, Like Possesses good hardness and high strength, hardenability, quenching deformation of small, high temperature creep rupture strength and high. Used in the manufacture requirements higher than 35 crmo steel strength and conditioning section more large forgings, such as locomotive traction with the big gear, supercharger drive gear, rear axle, the load of connecting rod and a spring clip, can also be used to under 2000 m deep well of oil drill pipe joint and the fishing tool and so on.

Forging of 1.7225 steel material

Preheat slowly to 750°C then increase the temperature more rapidly to 1150-1200 °C. Do not forge below 850°C. Then cool the 1.7225 slowly after forging, cool in ash or lime ,either in a furnace or in vermiculite.

Annealing of 1.7225 steel material

Heat to the 1.7225 steel and Soak thoroughly at 800-850°C before furnace cooling at a maximum rate of 20°C per hour down to 480°C followed by cooling in furnace or air.

Stress Relieving  of 1.7225 steel material

When must tools made from 1.7225 alloy steel are heavily machined or ground , the relief of internal strains is advisable before hardening to minimise the possibility of distortion. Stress relieving is very necessary, stress relieving should be done after rough machining. To stress relieve, heat the component carefully to 700°C, allow a good soaking period (two hours per 25mm of ruling section). Cool in the furnace or in air. The tools may then be finish machined before hardening.

Hardening of 1.7225 steel material

DIN 1.7225 Delivery condition usually is ready heat treatment to 18-22HRc. If needs, the further heat treatment should heat it slowly to 840-875°C, Then soaking enough time ensure heat adequate thoroughly, then quenching in oil ,Until the room temperature

Tempering of 1.7225 steel material

Heat the DIN 1.7225 to 500-770°C, Heat uniformly to the required temperature allowing a soaking time of two hours per 25mm of ruling section. Withdraw from the furnace and allow to cool in air.  Different tempering temperature will get different hardness

Welding  of 1.7225 alloy structural steel material

In general, we do not advise the welding of alloy steel but users sometimes prefer to weld in order to avoid the cost of retooling. It should be remembered that this grade is an air hardening steel and that in welding the area of the weld attains a temperature of about 1000°C. Cracking is likely to occur during cooling unless proper precautions are taken. Popular methods of welding are atomic hydrogen and argon arc. We recommend you contact your welding consumables supplier who should provide you full assistance and information on welding alloy steels.

Steps to weld 1.7225:

  1. Preheat Per Table 6-13 in page 6.1-29 of The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding we need to preheat as follows:

Up 1/2″ thickness   400-500F

1/2″ – 2″ thickness  600-700F

Other  publications recommend a preheat of only 350 up to 1/2″, 450″ from 1/2″ to 1″, and 500 for 1″ to 2″.  Keep in mind that when a part is preheat over 500F  it becomes extremely uncomfortable for the welder.  These lower preheat temperature are use with success, but go with the higher ones is you want to play it extra safe.  The higher temperatures will produce slower cooling rates.

It is important that the interpass temperature not be below the minimum preheat temperature.  If more than one pass is required make sure the part is above that minimum temperature, if not, get that rose bud and heat the part.

  1. Use a low-hydrogen electrode (whether using GTAW, GMAW or SMAW)

The filler metal recommended for welding 1.7225 steel is ER80S-D2.  ER70S-2 can be used but you will be undermatching the base material.  Low-hydrogen electrodes minimize the amount of diffusible hydrogen in the weld.  With the elevated carbon content even low levels of hydrogen can wreck havoc.

  1. Slow cool the part. Preheating will take care of this most times; however, using heating blankets to assure a slow cooling rate is good practice. As mentioned above a slow cooling rate prevents embrittlement (crack sensitive area in the heat affected zone).  It also allows hydrogen more time to leave the weld, thus reducing the possibility of hydrogen-induced cracking.

Nitriding of 1.7225 steel material

1.7225 alloy steel can be nitrided to give a hard surface case. After the nitriding heat treatment, the 1.7225 is then very resistant to wear and erosion. Nitriding also increases resistance to corrosion.

Final Grinding of 1.7225 steel material

Gringding the DIN 1.7225 Steel. Select the correct grade of wheel in consultation with the grinding wheel manufacturer. Ensure the grinding wheel is in good condition by means of a suitable dressing tool. Wet grinding is a preferable option using a copious supply of coolant. If dry grinding is resorted to then use a very soft wheel.
