8620 application – 8620 steel is widely used, mainly used to manufacture machine parts such as gears, crankshafts, gear rings, etc.
AISI 8620 steel forging material is used extensively by all industry sectors for light to medium stressed components and shafts requiring high surface wear resistance with reasonable core strength and impact properties.
Why 8620 steel is preferred for these machine parts?
When the 8620 alloy is properly carburized — heated to a set temperature and then exposed to an agent containing carbon, a process which adds an extra layer of carbon to the outside of the steel, thereby making it stronger — it is used to make such machine parts as gears, crankshafts, and gear rings. Carburized 8620 alloy is strong and durable, which is why it is preferred for these parts.
AISI 8620 is an alloy carburizing steel when thermally treated develops a hard outer case with a soft ductile core. Carefully controlled proportions of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum are responsible for the extensive use as carburizing alloy steel, with valuable features including extreme surface hardenability and good internal strength. Has minimum distortion and growth characteristics. 8620 has good machinability and responds well to polishing.
8620 Application
Typical applications are Arbors, Bearings, Bushings, Cam Shafts, Differential Pinions, Guide Pins, King Pins, Pistons Pins, Gears, Splined Shafts, Ratchets, Sleeves and other applications where it is helpful to have a steel that can be readily machined and carburized to controlled case depths.
8620 applications include gears, pinions, cams, cranks, clutch shafts, shafting, axles, tie bars, collets, bushings, heavy-duty pins, bolting, springs, hand tools, die cases, and a multitude of machinery parts and components.
